Alcoholic beverages are available in Thailand and there are so many kinds and brands. At the same time the cost of alcohol in Thailand is low, but the quality is very high. Perhaps due to this, drinkers on holiday, arriving in Thailand, do not feel wronged and begin “tasting” of local alcoholic beverages, including beer, right in the airport Suvarnabhumi. In this article, I will talk about alcohol in Thailand who drink Thais and foreign tourists, voiced the price of alcoholic beverages in Thailand in 2017 and give some of their own assessment of the Thai alcoholic beverages, which I tasted lately in Thailand. As usual, I will start with low-alcohol drinks, gradually moving to a more strong alcoholic beverages in Thailand.

Alcohol in Thailand – brands and prices (video)

Alcohol in Thailand: especially the consumption and sales

The availability of alcohol in Thailand, even for the locals and a large number of tourists has led to the fact that the Kingdom of Thailand is included in the global top five in alcohol consumption per capita. However, it is worth noting that the alcoholic beverages consumed in Thailand is not the same uniform. Thus, the share of the country’s southern provinces, where the population is predominantly Muslim, is not more than 8% on the amount of alcohol consumed annually. Conversely, in the north, where there are mostly Buddhists and is cold enough (by Thai standards) at night in the winter, the locals drink many times more. Of course, a huge amount of alcohol consumed in the popular resorts of Thailand, where the most favorable conditions are created for this. Even people who do not drink alcohol almost everyday life in Thailand often can not resist the temptation to try the local drink of varying degrees of fortress, in spite of the fact that to enjoy your vacation in this country and feel a sense of euphoria, you can be absolutely sober.

In accordance with local legislation, the sale of alcohol while in Thailand is limited. Thus, the official ban on the sale of alcohol from 00.00 (midnight) till 11.00 am and in the afternoon – from 14.00 till 17.00. Here it should be noted that not all such prohibitions are strictly observed.  More strictly this rule is observed in Bangkok and in the non-touristic areas of the country. But on the popular Thai resorts more liberal, so if you want to buy a drink – you have a chance to do so at any time of the day or night. Even search for shop selling alcohol, a long time is not necessary – they are everywhere. Although there are situations where you can not buy alcohol at all. For example, on election day you can not even buy a thai beer.

Also, the sale of alcohol is completely banned in some important national holidays, such as the birthday of the King or Queen, etc. A ban on alcohol sales in Thailand are often announced and during the elections to various state authorities. What to do if you want to drink alcohol, but its stores do not sell even beer ? Firstly, many bars at your disposal. Second, a minimum set of alcohol in Thailand is usually contained in the mini-bar hotel. Third, you should remember the main holidays in Thailand (at the same time learn the culture of the country). By law, alcohol is not sold in stores near schools, churches, especially mosques, shops and gas stations. Also, be aware that the sale of alcohol in Thailand is only allowed to persons with the age after 20 years. However, such a restriction on tourists especially are not covered, so that even high school graduates and first-year students can be assured that they will not go without alcohol, and to drink or not to drink – it’s up to them.

Low-alcohol drinks in Thailand

The main and most popular for tourists and for local residents low-alcohol drink – Thai beer, which has a pleasant taste, very refreshing and thirst quenching. Since about this drink on the site already has a separate article “Thai beer: brands, prices, taste, review”, i will not details write about this here.

Bacardi Breezer – most popular cocktail in Thailand

A very popular drink is a cocktail Bacardi Breezer, which, as the name suggests is based on the famous rum. This cocktail is the second most popular in the world (second only to Smirnoff Ice), but personally I have formed the opinion that in Thailand at the Bacardi Breezer in the segment has no competitors, as in any bar or shop tourists and locals choose this cocktail . And that Bacardi Breezer, you can often find a mini bar in the room at the hotel, although exceptions can also be.

There are different flavors (orange, lime, grapefruit, strawberries, grapes), while the volume of the bottle is small – only 0.33 liters. Price from 35 baht to 200 baht stores in popular clubs. In Insomnia club in Pattaya, where I sometimes ordered the drink in Thailand for me and for my thai girlfriend, the price of 185 baht (2016). Less common, but still can be found and other low-alcohol cocktails: Spy, the same Smirnoff Ice, and Ginger and Nite. Prices are about the same, the taste can not say, because i am not  tried in Thailand these alcoholic cocktails.

Rice wine Siamsato – original taste and low cost

Very popular low alcohol drink in Thailand – is a rice wine Siam Sato. For sale in two varieties: bottles of 0.7 liters fortress 8% and 0.25 liter bottles strength of 5%. Often you can find the first option – a large bottle, usually sold in the beer sections. So when I first bought Siam Sato, I did not even know that this wine (think strong beer) and was very surprised to taste. Taste, it must be said, on the fan. Reminds that somewhere between cider and champagne, but with fewer bubbles. Despite a good snack, I hardly drank a big bottle, and small did not even want to buy and when to try, although after reading somewhere that it is more pleasant taste, especially with ice.

By the way, the network of shops 7Eleven usually only sold large bottles of Siam Sato, and small is better to look at the major supermarkets – Tesco Lotus, Big-C, etc. Despite the high alcohol content, rice wine somehow cheaper beer. If my memory serves me, price of a bottle of 0.7 liter just 35 baht, and small bottle – from 22 to 25 baht. Definitely, it is one of the cheapest ways to get drunk in Thailand. But you must remember that the taste of rice wine a little specific, and only few of my friends can drink more than one bottle of warm wine Siam Sato. Therefore it is better to drink this low-alcoholic drink with ice or from the refrigerator.

My favorite brand of thai fruity wine – Fresco

Such alcohol in Thailand, as the grape wine is not too popular with the locals, because the culture of wine was born in the country of just over 30 years ago, and in the sale of the first Thai wine appeared only in 1995 under the name Chateau de Loei. Therefore, in the most of the stores you can find not local, but imported wine from Chile, New Zealand, Australia, and from Europe. The minimum price for a bottle in the supermarket 200-300 THB. The cost of a good old wine from major world producers comes to 1000-1500 baht per bottle. Thai wine is also represented in the supermarkets of the country mainly from the company Siam Winery, which owns a large number of vineyards in the district of  Hua-Hin.

Also in the thai supermarkets you can find and fruit and berry wines under the brand Fresco, which for its unusual taste and aroma have already won several international medals. Personally, I really like this sparkling wine. Generally, the wine industry in the country is developing rapidly, so many of those who “turn up his nose” of Thai wine 10 years ago recognized that today it has become much better and more pleasant to the taste. Among the most recommended to eat Thai wine brands can be noted Mont Clair, Peter Vella and Kookaburra, produced under the supervision of European winemakers.

Strong alcohol in Thailand

All lovers of alcoholic beverages in Thailand, preferring such recognized brands as Jack Daniels, Johnny Walker, Chivas Regal, etc. can be quiet: all this and much more is available and prices not too overpriced even compared to the Duty Free prices. And buy or order these drinks you can in almost every shop and bar. However, this article is primarily about thai alcohol in Thailand, so I tell you in more detail all the same is not about the famous international brands, but about the most interesting from my point of view of local brands of strong alcohol drinks.

SangSom – Thai rum №1

The legendary Thai rum. I do not accidentally set it on top of the list, as the drink is the most popular local alcoholic drinks from tourists according to statistical data, as well as in my personal ranking. Produced Sangsom rum from Thai sugar cane and has a strength of 40%. This alcoholic drink in Thailand has many international medals and exported to the two dozen countries. For all those who do not like rum, still advise you to try this drink, as even the taste of undiluted Sangsom is very nice: a drink on the surprisingly soft and has a pleasant aftertaste.

SangSom – rum number 1 in Thailand

Personally I do not like to dilute strong drinks with cola or other drinks, so always drink Sangsom pure. I do not accidentally use the word “drink”, because from each trip bring home 5-6 bottles of the drink and sometimes use this drink “for medicinal purposes”. And every time I drink a couple of glasses of rum, I always think of Thailand and plan to soon return to this wonderful country :). On the other hand, many people drink Sangsom in cocktails, diluting cola and energy drinks in Thailand.

Even at numerous beach parties, including the Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan is the rum is the main component of the famous “buckets of alcohol.” On the Internet you can find information all over the place, that the cost of a small bottle of Sang Som (0,37l volume in the form of a flat flask) is 130-140 baht in 7Eleven stores. In reality, from 2014 all a bit wrong: Now rum Sang Som worth 155 baht 7Eleven and Family Mart, and for 130 baht a similar bottle can be bought only in large supermarkets, for example, Tesco Lotus and smaller stores this network.

[ad#under]

As a gift or a souvenir from Thailand is better to buy a large bottle of Sangsom volume of 0.7 liters. The price will be comparable to the two small, and you additionally get a beautiful gift box. In addition to drink with white label (Sang Som Gold) in the sale is a variety with black label SangSom Premium, which is kind of like a sustained 5 years in oak barrels. IMHO, the taste is the same, so I do not see sense to overpay.

Mekhong Whiskey

The drink, named after one of the largest rivers in the country. Sold as the SangSom in small flat bottles and bottles of 0.7 liters in boxes. Easily recognized by their bright yellow label with red inscription «Mekhong». Sometimes you can see this drink in Thailand without Latin inscriptions, but also easy to learn all the yellow label and red  thai lettering in diagonal (sometimes the label is not yellow, and beige or light brown).

Mekhong Whiskey – popular brand of thai whiskey

Despite the fact that this is the Mekhong whiskey to taste it is closer to the classic rum than Sang Som, because it serves as a raw material for molasses from sugar cane (95%) and Thai rice (5%). The manufacturer claims that the composition is also added to a mixture of Thai herbs, spices and plant roots, the recipe of which is kept in the strictest confidence. Alcohol content in Mekhong whiskey – 35%. Compared with SangSom rum, taste of the Mekhong whiskey in my opinion worse, tighter. But this is my opinion and you may think differently, so try for yourself.

After each glass of the Mekhong, I want to drink something more enjoyable, so it is best to dilute this whiskey with cola or other soft drinks. Despite a long history (first released in 1941) and love for him Thais themselves, a brand, a former long time the most popular in the country, gradually lost their positions, and from 2010 this brand vooobsche not produced till 2011 (in this period production and brand was sold to the new owner). Personally, I did not like the Mekhong whiskey, bought more than once, and no such desire, because I like to drink in the pure form. But everyone has different tastes, so you can try, because this drink cheaper than SangSom.

Hong Thong Whiskey

Enough popular with the locals alcoholic drink in Thailand, which is well matched with cola or drink with good snack. Like whiskey Mekhong, Hong Tong inferior in taste rum SangSom and it is more “hard” drinks. However, the popularity of the drink is quite high and I am sure that the reason is not only to a lesser value than the price of SangSom rum and alcohol of foreign brands.

Hong Thong – Mekhong Whiskey – the most popular brand of thai whiskey

Fortress of Hong Thong – 35%, and this drink sold in flat small bottles and standard bottles of 0,7 liters with a label light beige color, on which is written the name in big red letters. Larger bottles are sold in gift boxes of red color. Unlike brand Mekhong, whiskey Hong Tong I occasionally buy and drink, pre-cooled in a refrigerator of hotel (this drink in a warm as it seems to me nasty). But for drink at home i still never take Hong Thong whiskey from Thailand and like souvenir too.

Sang Thip Whiskey

Sang Thip Whiskey as though created in order to quickly get drunk in Thailand as much as possible cheap. If my memory serves me, there is this sort of alcohol in Thailand less than 100 baht for a small flat bottle with a black label on which the red bar on the diagonal is written the name of the drink. Not to be confused with the SangSom Premium (labels visually similar). It is believed that the drinking of Sang Thip Whiskey dangerous because at some point a feast man who drinks the drink, begins to experience memory problems. For example, the next morning people do not remember what they did the night before.

I did not encounter a similar phenomenon, but not drink so much. As is the case with the Mekong whiskey, buy a second time, and even more so to drive home this drink did not have the desire. By the way, in Thai shops and supermarkets can be found and other spirits for less than 100 baht. Some of them I tried an experiment (with green label with wording in the Thai language), but the taste is not impressed, but rather the opposite. So I think that will not be mistaken when I will write that all drinks in this price range do not have a pleasant taste.

Lao Khao Whiskey – cheap thai moonshine

Lao Khao Whiskey – Thai moonshine

In an article on Thai alcohol, I must tell you about another one “legendary” brand – Lao Khao whiskey. In the process of manufacture of this alcoholic beverage used Thai rice wine. Those, Lao Khao – a product of distillate of rice wine in whiskey. The drink is a kind of moonshine and has a corresponding taste, so if you want to try it in the tourist bars, you probably will not find Lao Khao there. In other words, Lao Khao is alcohol in Thailand, which is in demand in the lower strata of the population, which  abusing alcohol. So if you ask to sell you a bottle of Lao Khao in the store, the seller is very surprised and will look at you suspiciously.

Lao Khao you can find in the bottles, that look like beer bottles: small have a volume of 0.33 liters and larger – 0.625 liters. Since all the inscriptions made in the Thai language, you can remember that Lao Khao with red or yellow label – is a fortress of 28%. Lao Khao with green and pink labels, respectively, have a fortress of 30% and 35%. The most strong grade Lao Khao is the whiskey that is bottled with a blue (or blue) label – 40%.

Also, if the store several varieties of Lao Khao the strongest can be determined at a higher price. Very popular souvenir from Thailand – is a local bottle of whiskey infused with the local fauna: spiders, scorpions, snakes, etc. I have not tried these drinks, but repeatedly heard that as the basis for their preparation is taken as time Lao Khao, as the cheapest possible. And according to rumors, these drinks are considered useful, but their taste is terrible, so it is best to use such drinks as original souvenirs from Thailand.

Sometimes alcohol from Thailand – an original souvenir

It’s not all types of alcohol in Thailand, but the most famous and popular beverages, giving an idea of the alcohol market of the country, I have listed. I would also like to remind you that my tastes may differ significantly from your own and what I liked, not necessarily like you, and vice versa. Therefore, I recommend to try different alcoholic beverages in Thailand. So in the future you can choose the one that will be favorite for you personally. I wish you a pleasant stay in Thailand without hangover!

Thai beer - full reviewAll brands of  thai beer, which you can find on sale in Thailand, can be divided into two major groups: local brands and global brands. Here it should be noted that all the beer in Thailand produced in modern plants under strict control of western management, so the quality of any kind is at a high level, and the choice of thai beer depends more on the taste preferences of the individual. Personally, I really like thai beer (i mean local varieties), so I decided to describe the most common and popular brands that are most popular with tourists, and which I personally very like.

[ad#res]

I think, to describe the world-famous brand of beer does not make sense, because the taste is almost always the same (in the airplane  i usually must choose between Foster’s, Heineken and Carsberg), but in Thailand I drink only local varieties. Due to the fact that beer in thai language sounds like “beer” problems with acquisition usually not occurs. Cost of beer depends on the place of purchase and size of bottles (cans). In contrast to the volume of 0.5 liters that is widespread in Europe, in Thailand beer is produced in 0.33 l bottles. and 0.64 l. There are also beer bottles with a volume of 0.66 liters and 0.62 liters.

The price of a small bottle or can starts from 30-40 baht. It is more profitable to buy a large bottle, but not very big beer lovers often cannot alone overpower such a volume, especially since the local beer is strong enough. Also note that in Thailand you can buy beer in aluminum cans. However, their size is slightly different from the usual. Small cans of beer currently have a volume of 0.32 liters, and large – 0.49 liters. Another feature of Thailand is the absence of non-alcoholic and dark beers. At least I have not seen such varieties, although I really like to try new brands of Thai beer and i am regularly do it.

Singha beer

Thai beer Singha – brand #1 in Thailand

One of the most popular varieties of local beer called «Singha» (Thais say “Sing beer”, which means “Lion Beer”). This beer have a fortress of 5%. This is the main beer brand of the Thai concern Boon Rawd. On the white label stylistically figure of the Golden Lion, the top and contains the inscription Singha, made the same golden letters. Beer of the brand with a lower alcohol content – Singha Light  with fortress 3.5%. Aforementioned brand of thai beer produced for over 80 years (since 1933) with using of local barley and German hops. This is the first Thai beer, which I tried, but I sometimes think it is slightly bitter, and sometimes – with a slightly sour aftertaste, so I drink it not very often, and  only with beer snacks. However, the volume of consumption of beer in Thailand show that beer is very good, so I advise to be sure to try, especially since it costs only a little more expensive than other brands of thai beers.

The cost of Singha beer at Big-C and Tesco Lotus supermarkets (2019)

Bottle 0.32L = 37 THB

Canned 0.32L = 36 THB

Package 6 x 0.32L: = 208 THB

Bottle 0.63L = 62 THB

Chang beer

Thai beer Chang

Thai beer Chang – one of most popular brand in Thailand

The second popular brand – Chang beer with two white elephants on the label, which is dominated by various shades of green color (depending on the variety). “Chang” means elephant, as you probably already know, especially if you read the article “Koh Chang” – Bounty Island in the Siam Gulf”. Brand there is a relatively recent (about 17 years) and was founded by beer company with a worldwide reputation – Carlsberg. Currently, the beer brand belongs to the Thai concern Thai Beverages. Classical Chang beer has 6.4% alcohol; Chang Draught contains 5% alcohol, and the weakest is the beer Chang light, which contains only 4.2% alcohol.

Personally, I like Chang light Thai beer most of all, as well as Chang Export, which also contains 5% alcohol. During my first trips to Thailand, the share of Chang beer (primarily Light and Export) accounted for at least 50% of the volume of all drunk Thai beer. And I usually preferred to take a few cans of such beer from Thailand home. Later, I began to like other Thai beers, but I still drink quite a few Chang beer in bars, where this beer is often draft.

Bottle 0.32L = 32 THB

Canned 0.32L = 32 THB

Package 6 x 0.32L: = 191 THB

Bottle 0.62L = 52 THB

2 cans x 0.49L = 91 THB

Leo beer

Leo beer - my favourite brand of thai beer

Leo beer – my favourite brand of thai beer

One of the cheapest brands of Thai beer, but little bit less popular and prevalent than the two described above, it is considered thai beer «Leo». Produced by concern Boon Rawd (like Singha beer). On the label with a predominance of red color depicts spotted leopard, and in the the center – three distinct large white letters forming the name of the beer «LEO». Interesting enough beer, which has a 3.5% percentage of alcohol. Beer Leo is not different pronounced taste. This thai beer is not bitter and not sour, so it’s perfect to quench your thirst. I personally after one bottle for a long time do not want to drink even a hot day in the sun.

Since I am a fan of these beers, I find this interesting brand. Especially because when meeting with the locals (thai girls) i call my name how Leo, showing  this bottle. Had noticed that it turns much easier than called full my name (Leonid) that local persons remember and pronounce the difficult (and maybe they just lazy :)). Since 2017, this sort of Thai beer has become for me the most beloved and often used. I usually buy Leo beer in cartons with two cans or two bottles. As a rule, this is a more profitable option, which saves 8-10 THB.

Bottle 0.32L = 35 THB

Canned 0.32L = 35 THB

Package 6 x 0.32L: = 202 THB

Canned x 0.49L = 50 THB

Tiger beer

Thai beer - Tiger

Tiger beer – popular international beer brand in Thailand

Apparently, because thai peoples have a true love to large cats , and may as a tribute to tradition, the stores you can found and thai beer «Tiger», which miraculously translated as Tiger. Beer is easily distinguished by a bright blue label, which shows at the top of sneaking through the jungle tiger, and bottom – in large print orange is written the name of the brand – Tiger. In general, the Thai beer Tiger is a soft and perfectly refreshing, but in the aftertaste is slightly felt bitterness. The cost of this brand slightly more expensive than Leo, but cheaper Singha and Chang, although in some shops the price of beer Chang was identical. It is worth noting that if you already traveled to other countries of Southeast Asia, you could have tasted this beer in Vietnam, Laos, Singapore, etc. For example, my sister brought me this beer from Malaysia (made and bottled there). The beer brand belongs to the famous Heineken brewing company, so you can find this kind of beer in Europe.

Canned 0.32L = 33-35 THB

Bottle 0.62L = 55-56 THB

San Miguel Light beer

San Migel beer in Thailand is the most refreshing

I tried this beer only during the second long travel to Thailand, but I really liked its taste and for several years I have chosen this brand in situations where I want to quench my thirst. San Miguel Light beer is brewed in the Thai province of Pathum Thani by the Philippine San Miguel Corporation and in stores it is easy to distinguish by a transparent bottle with a white and blue label. Despite the word light in the name of beer, it is not low alcohol and contains 5% alcohol. In most cases, I buy this beer not in stores, but I order in Thai bars. And for this there is one reason: a special process of use. When you order San Miguel beer in a bar (and this is likely to be San Miguel Light beer), this beer will be served to you in an open bottle, on the neck of which 1/4 of green lime will lie.

Before drinking beer, you must either squeeze the lime juice into the bottle, or generally push this piece of lime inside the bottle. After that, the beer quenches thirst and refreshes. I think no other Thai beer is as refreshing as San Miguel Light cold beer with a slice of lime inside. But if you are a lover of varieties of beer with a pronounced taste, then San Miguel Light may not like you. San Miguel Light beer has almost no bitterness and taste of hops, so it is preferred by girls who work in bars in Pattaya or Phuket. There is also an opinion that this beer contains fewer calories, and that is why girls prefer to use this particular variety.

Bottle 0.33L = 38-41 THB

Canned 0.33L = 39-40 THB

Bottle 0.64L = 70 THB

Phuket beer – original rice beer

Phuket beer – popular thai beer with a toucan on the label

In the name of this Thai beer you can see the name of the country’s largest island, but you can find Phuket beer not only in Phuket Island, but also in Bangkok, Pattaya and other resorts, although not in every store. As in the case of San Miguel Light beer, Phuket beer is made at the San Miguel factory in Pathum Thani province, north of Bangkok. On the green label of Phuket beer is a famouus tropical bird – toucan with a large beak, under which the name of the brand – PHUKET is written in large letters. For the manufacture of this beer is used German hop and a special sort of Thai rice – jasmine.

Phuket beer has a slightly sweet taste, and in the aftertaste you can feel the aroma of tropical fruits. Beer has an alcohol content of 5% and is made only from natural ingredients. For its taste, Phuket beer was awarded a gold medal at an international beer competition in Belgium and became the first Thai beer to receive such an award. Currently, the Thai company Tropical Beverage International exports Phuket beer around the world, so there is a chance to find this brand in other countries.

Cheers beer and Archa beer

Archa and Cheers beer in Thailand are good cheap varieties

Practically in every Thai store you can find Cheers beer in bottles and aluminum cans. This beer brand has been produced by Heineken in Thailand since 2005. In order not to compete with more premium beer brands from the same concern, Cheers beer is sold at one of the lowest prices in the country. As a rule, in popular chain stores you can buy a can of 0.49 liters for 47-49 THB, and a bottle of 0.63 liters for a similar price can be purchased on the Tesco Lotus network. Despite its low cost, Cheers beer is of high quality and has a good, slightly sweet taste. Sometimes I buy this beer for dinner when I eat spicy Thai food. Cheers beer is recommended to be consumed with ice or in very chilled form.

Archa beer has been produced since 2004 by Thai Beverages concern (the same as Chang beer). Initially, beer contained 5.4% alcohol, but 10 years after the release of the first bottle, the alcohol content was reduced to 5%. On the label of Archa beer you can see the head of a white horse. The logo of this beer is directly related to its name, because from the Thai language the word Archa is translated as “equestrian”. It was not by chance that I placed this beer brand together with Cheers beer, since they are in many ways similar. These are low-cost beers, but they taste quite good. Archa beer is even cheaper than Cheers beer. For example, you can buy a can of Archa beer at the Tesco Lotus supermarket for only 28 THB. Personally, I didn’t really like the slightly sour taste of this beer and I can recommend it only for travelers with small budget along with spicy dishes and only chilled.

Beer in Thailand: where to buy and how to drink

Due to the fact that the classic Thai beer has a sufficiently high content of alcohol and use it, you’ll not only for dinner, but often at the beach should be some caution, because in a hot climate, alcohol can affect the body very quickly. Buy thai beer can be almost anywhere, but most often it is done in chain stores SevenEleven and Family Mart. As a rule, you can find a beer at the far end of the hall, in the refrigerator. In supermarkets, Tesco Lotus, Big C and other large stores beer (and other alcoholic drinks) is cheaper at 8-12 thai baht for a large bottle, so if you take a lot – get substantial savings – enough to pay for city transport in Pattaya to this store and come back and save money.

[ad#res] During some holidays in Thailand and other important events (eg, elections), alcohol (including beer) can not be sold for all of buyers. If you really want and you live in a hotel room with a mini bar, you can always take it the next day to make up stocks bought in the store (if you, of course, has the meaning of the fact that in the mini bar prices for drinks above somewhere in the 2 times). Pretty funny to watch how in these days close to midnight near the sealed fridges with thai beer begin to accumulate “hungry”, looking at the clock. Also remember that alcohol in Thailand does not sell until 11:00 am and between 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm daily.

But if you want to buy beer in the morning or in the afternoon in tourist places (Pattaya, Phuket, Koh Chang, Koh Samui, etc.), you can do this in most Family Mart stores and 7Eleven even if the time when the beer coolers when a ban on the sale of alcoholic beverages. At the same time, there are shops in which refrigerators with beer are closed with an opaque film and beer in such stores will not be sold to you. In such cases, just exit the store and go to the next one, which may be 50 meters away and in which you can easily buy beer at any time of the day.

Thai beer bottle holder

Thai beer bottle holder

Many locals prefer to add ice in beer so that it stays cold longer. Here it should be noted that the usual ice still melts quickly in a hot climate, so the beer becomes watery and loses its taste. A good way out of this situation – a special ice, which is characterized by an increased melting time and does not cost much more than usual. Buy this ice can be in the same 7/11. Another good way to keep the thai beer cold – the use of special holders, in which is inserted  a bottle or can. These bottles-holders keep the temperature of thai beer because the bad skip  warm air and heat from hands. And  these beer holders – a great souvenir from Thailand, which can be used for other purposes at home or you can give to your friends like original thai souvenir.

Rice noodles Pad Thai is one of the most common dishes of modern Thai cuisine. In whatever region of the country you are, you will most likely find Pad Thai in the menu of most Thai cafes, as well as in the streets of cities and resorts, because Pad Thai is also a popular street food dish. Not all foreigners find a common language with Thai cuisine because of the acuteness of many traditional dishes, but in the case of Pad Thai noodles everything is simple, because this dish has minimal sharpness and you can order this dish absolutely everywhere. Pad Thai is my favorite dish in Thailand, which I can eat almost daily. In addition, Pad Thai is very easy to prepare at home, so in this article I will share a simple recipe – with the help of step-by-step instructions with photos.

[ad#res]

Pad Thai in Thailand – the main types

When ordering this dish in Thailand, you will most likely be asked what kind of Pad-Thai noodles you prefer? Usually you can choice of Pad Thai with chicken, shrimp, pork and other kinds of meat. The most popular species are Pad Thai with chicken and shrimp. It is these two species that you will easily find in all the sea resorts of the country, and in the Thai outback and in the northern regions of the country for natural reasons is more popular is the Pad Thai with the chicken. There are a lot of recipes for cooking this noodle, and each cook has his own little secrets, making this dish unique. Like most other Thai dishes, Pad Thai consists of a large number of ingredients that can be divided into basic (rice noodles, meat or seafood, eggs, special sauce) and auxiliary ones, such as vegetables and greens, as well as tofu bean curd and green lime.

One of the variants of Pad Thai on the island of Koh Chang – with carrots

As a result, the absence of one of the auxiliary ingredients has practically no effect on the overall taste of the finished dish. For example, many people consider tofu to be obligatory in Pad Thai noodles, but Thai people do not always add it to this dish. In my experience, in about half the cases Pad Thai is cooked without tofu and I can not say that the dish is becoming less tasty. Also in different parts of the country, it was necessary to try Pad Thai with a different set of vegetables (for example, with cabbage, carrots, young bean pods). By the way, thinly sliced white cabbage can replace sprouted bean sprouts in this dish.

Pad Thai noodles – prices in Thailand

Since Pad Thai does not belong to a gourmet dish, the cost of this noodle is available for any category of travelers to Thailand. In 2017-2018, the minimum cost of Pad Thai noodles is 50-60 THB (no more than 2 USD) when buying in mobile makashnitsa or in markets, and 80-120 THB when ordering Pad Thai in a cafe or restaurant. Naturally, we are talking about the cost of this dish at popular resorts in Thailand. In poor regions of the country (northeastern part of Thailand, known as Isan) you can find Pad Thai for 30-40 THB. For example, in the city of Nakhonratchasima (the center of the same province), I ordered this dish for 30 THB, although it seemed to me that the meat in it was slightly less than in Pattaya or in Phuket. It should also be noted that Pad Thai with shrimp can cost 10-20 THB more expensive than the same dish with chicken.

Pad Thai in Pattaya for takeout – packed with special container

When ordering noodles you may be asked: are you going to eat Pad Thai directly in the cafe, or want you to take this dish with you. In the first case you get your order on a plate and will be offered metal cutlery or chopsticks. And in the second – they will pack the prepared dish in a special container made of foamed plastic, which helps to keep the dish warm before using it. At the same time the cost of Pad Thai noodles does not depend on the place of consumption. Those. a disposable container, a plastic fork and a spoon, a napkin (not always) and a plastic bag into which all this fits, are issued free of charge and without a reminder. Also toppings are free: peanuts, a mixture of peppers, microscopic dried shrimps, etc. As a rule, you choose toppings yourself and sprinkle them with the ready-made dish before use or packing in a container.

The easiest recipe of Pad Thai for home cooking

Many lovers of Asian cuisine during their holidays in Thailand are accustomed to simple, but delicious dishes of this country, including Pad Thai. Therefore, after returning to their homeland, they begin to miss about fragrant fried noodles and in this situation there are two ways out. The first is visiting a Thai restaurant in your city. Unfortunately, these are not everywhere, and the cost of Pad Thai noodles in them is several times higher than in Thailand. The second option is to prepare Pad Thai at home. This requires only the presence of the necessary components, about 15 minutes of free time and the knowledge of a simple recipe. Below is a simple recipe for Pad Thai, which my Thai friend taught me. As I wrote earlier, there are a lot of recipes, so this is only one of the possible options, but in my opinion the easiest.

Pad Thai sauce + peanuts (you can buy in Thailand or in your big supermarket)

Immediately I warn that I do not bother making a special Pad Thai sauce based on tamarind paste and other ingredients that are not always easy to find in Europe. Therefore, in the process of making Pad Thai, I simply add the ready-made Pad Thai sauce. It can be purchased both directly in Thailand, and in a large supermarket of your city (in the departments of Asian food). Above, the photo shows the Pad Thai sauce, which I bought in Thailand for 28 THB (0.86 USD). In the package directly a special dark sauce based on tamarind with spices, as well as a bag of crushed peanuts, which you need use for sprinkle the prepared dish. Rice noodles also bought in a supermarket in Thailand, where it costs several times cheaper than in Europe.

Flat rice noodle from Thailand. Packaging for 2-3 servings

So, for cooking Pad Thai noodle with chicken at home, I use:

– chicken fillet (100-150 grams per serving);

– garlic (one large denticle per serving);

– chicken eggs (one per serving);

– vegetable oil (2-3 tablespoons);

– flat rice noodles (150-200 grams);

– sauce for Pad Thai (1 pack);

– green onions (several feathers);

– half lime per serving (can be replaced with lemon or lemon juice).

– Wok (a wide frying pan with high walls).

Process of cooking Pad Thai with chicken

On the photo, ingredients for cooking three portions. When I was preparing a photo report, there were no sprouted bean sprouts on sale and I forgot to buy a green onion, so Pad Thai turned out without them, but it is better to add these ingredients if possible at the end of cooking. Since the amount of rice noodles and sauce is calculated for 2 portions, and I cooked for three, i am added more meat (500 grams) to Pad Thai.

1. Chicken fillet cut into thin slices. It’s easier to do this when the meat is a little chilled in the freezer. For a change, sometimes you can cut the meat like a straw.

2. Put rice noodles in warm water for 10-12 minutes. This is convenient to do just before the preparation of the dish, i.e. before proceeding to roasting garlic and meat).

Before preparing Pad Thai, the noodles should be soaked for 10 minutes

3. In the wok (or usual wide frying pan with high walls) pour 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil and warm it.

4. Crush the cloves of garlic with a flat side of the knife and cut into several pieces. Add garlic to a skillet and fry over low heat.

5. Fry the meat until ready (choose the degree of roasting yourself, to your taste). During frying meat, you can increase the flame (if you use a gas stove). If you do not like meat fried well done, you can proceed to the next stage of cooking with 90% of the degree of required cooking.

6. Shift the meat aside (on the side of the frying pan) and alternately break eggs (one per serving). Eggs fry with constant stirring to get something like crumbly omelet.

Eggs for Pad Thai you need fried with constant stirring

7. Connect all the ingredients in the wok, stir and add the soaked rice noodles. The latter should not be too soft, but too hard – the exact time should be selected by experience. Thais sometimes soak dry noodles in cold water, but with me this way noodles turned hard, so I lower them for 10 minutes in warm water, closer to hot – 60-70 degrees Celsius).

Soaked rice noodles for Pad Thai – soft, but elastic

8. Next, mix the noodles with the other ingredients in the wok and add the ready-made sauce for Pad Thai. Mix everything for a uniform distribution of ingredients.

Dark sauce based on tamarind – the basis of the taste of Pad Thai

9. Add feathers of green onions (cut into fragments of dina 3-5 cm) and sprouted bean sprouts. It is also possible at this stage (instead of sprouts) to add thinly sliced cabbage and carrots. Stir everything and in a minute the dish is ready.

After cooking, Pad Thai should be sprinkled with nuts and use lemon juice

10. Distribute Pad Thai on your plates. Sprinkle with peanuts on top. Decorate the dish with half of green lime or pour lemon juice (to taste). In Thailand, there were variants decorated with pieces of fresh cucumber. You can eat Pad Thai with using a fork or chopsticks. When you eat Pad Thai, it will not be bad if you have Thai beer – tasty and inexpensive.

What better use for cooking Pad Thai at home

Earlier I used an ordinary wide frying pan for making a Pad Thai, but it was not very convenient: the volume of the dish is great, and it’s better to mix all the components of Pad Thai well noodles in a special frying pan. Later I bought a wok in the supermarket Big C in Pattaya. In general, such frying pans cost 600-800 THB, but often there are special promotions and wok with good quality can be purchased inexpensively. For example, in December 2017 I bought a non-stick wok for just 199 THB (about 6 USD). By the way, in the same store there were several models of the same diameter and at the same price (including metal ones, without protective coatings). I watched such frying pans on AliExpress and even found a model that is very similar to mine. But the prices in China are very high, about 50 USD with delivery and higher. By the way, Big C is a very large network in Thailand, so similar wok were on sale at a similar price in Bangkok, Phuket and Koh Chang. Therefore, if you have an empty seat in your suitcase, you can buy inexpensive wok in Thailand and cook Pad Thai at home. Bon Appetit!

Thailand is known worldwide as a country with inexpensive and very diverse food. Compared to countries in Western Europe, the USA, Japan, and other countries with a high standard of living, the cost of food in Thailand really seems very low. Everywhere in Thailand you can find food from 10 THB to 3,000 THB and above. At the same time you must know, that Thailand is a country in which the cost of the same dish can vary several times. In this short article I will tell you some secrets of local food service, thanks to which you can save a lot of money on food during your vacation in Thailand. I will also indicate the approximate prices of popular Thai dishes and drinks and advise places where you can buy them at the best prices.

1. Street food instead of restaurants

The street food industry in Thailand is so widely developed that literally every tenth resident of this country somehow takes part in this business. If you want to save on food in Thailand – street cafes, mini markets and mobile hawker stalls – your choice. Speaking of street cafes, I mean traditional cafes for local residents, not street cafes for foreigners in resorts. Cafe for locals is easy to distinguish by a simple interior (often plastic tables and chairs) and a small selection of simple dishes. Often on the tables there may be jugs with drinking water, and next to the cooking place there is a container with ice.

These three dishes cost less than 100 THB (Bangkok street cafe)

These three dishes cost less than 100 THB (Bangkok street cafe)

On mini-markets, usually prepared dishes of chicken, pork, beef, fish and seafood, as well as many soups in large containers. And, of course, local residents dine in institutions for local residents. To find such places, you don’t need to visit any areas remote from tourist places, because you can find street cafes even in the side streets on Walking Street in Pattaya, on Bangla Road in Phuket and next to Nana Plaza (Soi 4 Sukhumvit) in Bangkok. And mobile hawker stalls are generally found everywhere in Thailand and you can buy meat and fish dishes, traditional salads, soups and many types of BBQ.

As for prices, small skewers of chicken on skewers (satay) usually sell from 10 THB, pork skewers from 20 THB, a large piece of chicken on a bamboo skewer – 50-60 THB, a plate of delicious Pad Thai fried noodles – from 50 THB. Spicy papaya salad (Som Tam) from 30 THB. Prices are for tourist destinations, and if you move further away from them, the cost of dishes will be even lower. For example, I spent several days in Bangkok (the good and affordable At Mind Executive Suites) and ate at street cafes on Sukhumvit Road. I took fried rice with chicken and vegetables or Pad Thai with chicken, and my girlfriend a spicy salad or something else from meat and vegetables. For this food and 2 bottles of drinking water, we rarely paid more than 110 THB (3.5 USD). Delicious Thai fruits are also better to buy in mini markets outside of tourist places or at supermarket sales (more on this below).

2. Refuse food on the beaches

Buying food at beach cafes and from merchants who walk along the beach and offer you to buy fish, shrimp, fruits, BBQ and drinks is very convenient. You get the opportunity to get food right on the spot, but you pay too much for it. Therefore, if you want to save on food – you have to abandon the purchase of food on the beach. Surely on the way to the beach you will pass a grocery store where you can buy food and drinks at a good price. I recommend having breakfast in a Thai cafe before visiting the beach, and the next time you can get a good meal after leaving the beach. Do you remember that spending too much time on the beach is bad for your health and you know, how to sunbathe in Thailand correctly?

3. Cook for yourself

You may find this advice somewhat strange. Not only in large cities of the country, but also in small Thai villages, many people almost never cook for themselves and their families. It is often really cheaper to buy inexpensive street food. But my long trips to Thailand have proved that self-cooking does save a lot of time and money. Of course, if you live in a standard hotel room, the possibility of cooking is very limited. But if you prefer to live in private apartments, as I do with Airbnb (here you can get a bonus of 41 USD for registration in this app), then you will have a full kitchen. This means that in addition to the microwave oven, you will have a gas or electric stove, often a toaster, a set of dishes (at least a pot and frying pan), plates and cutlery.

Cooking in your own kitchen is always an economical option.

Cooking in your own kitchen is always an economical option.

It is not at all necessary to cook for yourself three times a day and spend the precious time of your vacation at sea on cooking. But you can always cook a simple breakfast for yourself and your family using products from 7Eleven or Thai supermarkets Tesco Lotus, Big C or Macro. For example, I often cook omelet with sausages or chicken for breakfast, adding fresh vegetables to it. It turns out quickly and very inexpensively. It is very convenient that in Thailand you can buy raw eggs not only in 10 pieces, but also in packages of 2, 4 or 6 eggs. I also sometimes indulge myself with french fries, which in cafes and markets in Thailand are usually not very cheap (a portion costs from 50 THB, while in the supermarket you can buy 1 kg of frozen french fries for 60-70 THB , and this is about 5 servings.

4. Ready meals at 7Eleven and Family Mart

You will find these two chains of convenience stores in all Thai cities and large villages. And if we are talking about Thai resorts, then these shops are often located every 50-200 meters. The advantage of shops is that in addition to products, classic snacks and bottled drinks, you can buy ready-made portioned dishes there. As a rule, these are dishes based on rice or noodles with the addition of various types of meat, fish and seafood. Not all of them are equally tasty and healthy: some are too spicy and have a strange taste due to the use of exotic spices and herbs. But there are dishes that I personally really like and that I could eat every day.

My favorite 7Eleven dish - is rice with crab and egg. Tasty and satisfying

My favorite 7Eleven dish – is rice with crab and egg. Tasty and satisfying

For example, I really like fried rice with crab and egg. This dish could be packed in round or rectangular plates, but it is always very fresh and tasty. The composition of the dish includes natural crab meat, not crab sticks (as you might think). The cost of one portion is 40-45 THB, while the store cashier will warm up the dish for free in the microwave and add a disposable spoon and fork. I also really like the taste of scrambled eggs with shrimps (peeled). This dish costs even less, about 35 THB (a little over 1 USD). Still sometimes I buy rice with fish, but this dish is suitable only for those who like spicy food. But I don’t like ready-made pork dishes in 7Eleven, because instead of meat there is minced meat and a lot of unpleasant spices. Also at 7Eleven you can cook a burger, warm up ready-made sandwiches with fillings, make instant soup, etc.

5. Cooked Food at Supermarkets Big C and Tesco Lotus

Big C is my favorite Thailand supermarket chain, not least because of the wide selection of ready-made meals. Every morning after the opening of large Big C supermarkets, you will find many prepared portioned dishes in disposable containers. These are rice dishes, and fish, and spaghetti with additives, and stuffed omelettes, and much more. The cost is very affordable for everyone! You can use the microwave to warm up the food or ask a store employee to help you with this. A very important advantage of supermarkets is the ability to cook fresh fish right in front of you. This service is FREE and you pay only for fish, and not for the cooking process. I advise you to pay attention that the cost of fish and seafood can be indicated both per unit and per 100 grams or 1 kilogram. The situation is similar in a many Tesco Lotus supermarkets.

6. Evening discounts in supermarkets

In Thailand, it is not customary to re-stick labels and change production dates on products (deceive customers). Large supermarkets try to sell all finished products on the day of manufacture. To do this, a big sale is held in the evening. You can find small tables with packs of prepared food right at the entrance to the supermarket. After 7 p.m. or 8 p.m. (depending on the particular supermarket), yellow price tags with a new price are pasted on the packages with ready-made food. Usually the initial discount is 25% of the original price. But if after an hour the goods remained unsold, the store employees again paste new price tags with an even lower price (50% discount).

Some Price Labels is Yellow - Big C Evening Sale

Some Price Labels is Yellow – Big C Evening Sale

You can find discounted products, first of all, in the culinary department. You are waiting for fried fish, rice dishes, omelettes, noodles, pieces of pork or chicken, boiled eggs with salads, sushi sets, etc. In the bakery department you will find bread, rolls, donuts and other flour products. It is very profitable to come to supermarkets in the evening for fruit. You can find many fruit plates with sliced fruit at a good price. Most often, sold at a discount are chopped watermelons, pineapples, ripe papaya, mangoes, dragon fruit, jackfruit, and fruit platter. I often buy packaged clusters of large grapes.

Tesco Lotus Evening Sale - 50% off

Tesco Lotus Evening Sale – 50% off

You can often find drinks at discounted prices. For example, I bought my favorite chocolate milk in large bottles several times. The discount in this case was due to the fact that several days remained before the expiration date. I hope you understand how profitable it is to visit Big C supermarkets in Thailand in the evening. Unfortunately, the choice of my favorite dishes is not always available there, and by the end of the first hour of the sale, the assortment may narrow significantly, so it is better to come to the beginning of the sale.

7. Thai buffets – a feast for the belly

Sometimes in Thailand you want to not only satisfy your hunger, but also try a lot of varied food. In such cases, I recommend visiting Thai buffets called mookata (self cook BBQ buffet). The essence of such institutions is as follows: you pay a fixed amount of money and cook for yourself on an individual grill pan in the center of the table. The grill pan is universal: the top is suitable for frying meat, and in the container around the perimeter you can simultaneously cook a delicious soup. At the same time, you can pick up various types of meat, vegetables, herbs, noodles, etc. without restrictions. There is also something like a buffet with ready-made dishes (french fries, pasta, rice, salads, fruit slices, desserts, pastries, etc.). Sometimes for large fish and seafood you must use a large common roasting pan (BBQ) and periodically turn the fish over so that it does not burn on the coals.

Mookata grill pan in unlimited thai buffet. Eat as much as you like

Mookata grill pan in unlimited thai buffet. Eat as much as you like

As you probably already understood, this is the best way to fill your stomach and have fun at the same time, because cooking in such establishments is very exciting. And if something doesn’t work out for you, employees of the establishment will always come to the rescue and show how best to cook this or that dish. The cost of visiting this kind of Thai buffets starts from 150 THB, but in the largest and most popular buffets it can be 199-249 THB. The disadvantage of this type of institution is the need to pay for drinks separately. Also keep in mind that in some buffets you have to eat everything you have gained (if you ruined a lot of food and didn’t eat half of it, you will have to pay a small fine).

In addition to the classic street buffet, which I talked about, in Thailand there are specialized buffets. The cost of visiting the latter is usually higher and can reach up to 1000 THB, especially when it comes to seafood buffets. More often such buffets are located in the area of popular beaches and are designed for tourists. Some hotel’s buffets specialize in breakfasts. The cost of visiting in such cases is often 99-150 THB, but the choice of dishes is not too large. Finally, you can find interesting buffets in large shopping centers. Often in such establishments, visit times may be limited. For example, in the popular network of Japanese buffets, you can eat any dish in any quantity, but within 1 hour, for 300-350 THB.

8. Carefully check the menu in cafes and restaurants

In some Thai cafes and restaurants, the cost of dishes on the menu can be indicated without taxes and fees. As a result, the bill for dinner can be significantly higher than you originally expected. Therefore, carefully study the menu before ordering: at the bottom of each page in small print it can be indicated that prices are without service tax (+ 10%) and VAT (+ 7%). In fact, I came across this only once on the island of Samui, but now I always check the menu. On the Internet you can also find information about cases when before the order tourists are shown one menu, and after billing – another, with higher prices. To protect yourself from this kind of fraud, you can take a picture of the menu before ordering or shoot it on video.

In markets, prices are usually indicated for all fish; in restaurants, for 100g.

In markets, prices are usually indicated for all fish; in restaurants, for 100g.

When checking the menu, pay attention to the serving size. In some fish restaurants and cafes with seafood, it is customary to indicate the cost per 100 grams. Those. if you ordered a large fish that weighs 400-500 grams, then you will have to pay 4-5 times more. Usually the menu indicates that the price is per 100 grams. But if in doubt, you can always ask the seller or waiter how much all the fish or lobster will cost. The cost per 100 grams is often written on the shelves in the form of boats with ice, which are located along the sidewalks in Thai resorts.

Give Up Western Fast Food

Fast food restaurants are not very popular in Thailand, and you rarely see a large line in Thai McDonalds. Due to the great popularity of street food and the low prices of products in the open-air stores, western fast food is not very popular. For Thais it is expensive and not very tasty, but for tourists it may not be very interesting. Moreover, the cost of ready meals in and KFC, Burger King or McDonalds is about 1.5 times more expensive than the average cost of dishes in Thai cafes. It was really very strange and unusual, but several times I was the only visitor to McDonalds in the evening in Pattaya when I bought ice cream there.

Eating western fast food restaurants is expensive and not very healthy

Choose Thai Restaurants

Resting in Thailand and wanting to save on food, it is better to order Thai dishes and generally choose Thai cafes. This is due to the fact that such establishments use local products. But Italian pizzerias or steakhouses can use imported semi-finished products, which is why your score will be two to three times higher than in a Thai restaurant. This rule is noticeable even on french fries, which costs 70-100 THB in a cafe for a not very large portion, because made from imported frozen potatoes. For the same reason, you will have to refuse to visit such famous chain cafes as Hard Rock and Hooters.

How to save on water in Thailand

Thailand is located in the tropics and it is a country of eternal summer. Therefore, even in the winter months, you will consume a lot of drinking water and drinks daily. Drinking tap water in Thailand is not recommended. And the minimum cost of 0.5 liters of bottled water is 6-7 THB in 7Eleven stores or 10 THB in cafes and restaurants. Locals often sell the same bottles on the street (in ice containers) at 15 THB. It’s a bit more profitable to buy bottles of water with a volume of 1.5 liters (from 20 THB) and large bottles of 5 liters (from 30 THB) in stores. But this is not the most profitable option. Even more profitable is to buy packages of 12-20 bottles in supermarkets, but this is not the most convenient option for an ordinary tourist. Thais and experienced tourists prefer to buy water in special vending machines with water.

In 7Eleven often promotions - 2 bottles of a drink for the price of one

In 7Eleven often promotions – 2 bottles of a drink for the price of one

Drinking water is sold for bottling to your own bottles. Just drop the coins and use your bottles. The cost of 1 liter of water in water vending machines ranges from 0.5 THB in areas without tourists and up to 2 THB in popular tourist places. But the most popular price is 1 THB for 1 liter of water. You can read more about this on the page “Drinking water in Thailand.” By simply comparing prices, you can calculate the approximate savings on water in cases when you buy it in water vending machines and when in stores. Unfortunately, it is not always convenient to carry water with you during your holidays in Thailand, even when you use a good backpack for traveling. Therefore, I prefer to use bottled water for use in a condo (for making tea) and I can take small bottles with me to the beach that are pre-chilled in the refrigerator.

Saving on alcohol

Many tourists can not imagine their holidays in Thailand without drinking Thai alcohol and Thai beer. Therefore, I will tell you how you can save on this item of expenditure. Strong alcohol in Thailand is best purchased in supermarkets, where prices are much lower. This can be seen even on small bottles. For example, you can buy my favorite Thai rum in 7Eleven stores for 155 THB (0.3l), while the same bottle in Big C or Tesco Lotus will cost 139 THB. The difference is only 16 THB per bottle and it’s not worth it to go to the supermarket specifically for 1 bottle (transport will cost more). But if in any case you will drink alcohol, you can buy it in advance while visiting the supermarket.

It is more profitable to buy both Thai and imported alcoholic beverages in hypermarkets

It is more profitable to buy both Thai and imported alcoholic beverages in hypermarkets

The situation is similar with Thai beer. It is most beneficial to purchase local brands in hypermarkets, especially in packages of 6-12 cans or bottles. Even in Family Mart and 7 Eleven, you can find mini packs of 2 cans or bottles that cost less than 2 bottles separately. Imported beers are more expensive in shops and bars, so if you want to save money, choose local beers. When visiting the bars, you can save by ordering draft beer instead of bottled beer. In the evening (until 22:00) in many bars and night clubs you can buy Thai beer at a special low price (happy hour), which is slightly higher than in the store. Often such conditions and for the purchase of low alcohol cocktails.

Using all of the above travel tips, you can save a significant amount of money while relaxing in Thailand. And saving on food does not mean that you should go hungry, spend half a day by the stove or refuse to visit cafes and restaurants. If you will be use in practice at least part of the knowledge gained here, and you can save money even when traveling to Thailand alone. And if you are traveling in a large company or family, the savings will be even more noticeable and enjoyable. Have a good rest and enjoy your meal!
